Kasey Chappelle
Data Protection Officer, GoCardless
Kasey Chappelle is data protection officer for GoCardless, a small but fast-growing fintech company that enables organisations to more easily collect and account for direct debit and other bank-to-bank transactions. GoCardless is based in London and has just opened its first international offices in Paris and Melbourne.
Before GoCardless, Kasey was chief privacy officer of American Express Global Business Travel, a spin-off of the 160-year-old consumer financial brand providing corporate travel management services in more than 120 countries. There, she created the privacy risk management programme, advised on the acquisition of travel technology companies, oversaw commercial compliance in product development, and helped create a data governance programme to support sustainable enterprise data business models.
Previous roles at companies like Vodafone Group and eBay Inc. saw her leading strategic privacy and public policy initiatives, advising on privacy by design, and guiding cross-border legal compliance for multinational organisations. She started her legal career as an associate in telecommunications, technology and privacy law at Willkie Farr and Gallagher in Washington, DC. And even earlier, she studied and worked in advertising and graphic arts – skills that have proven just as useful (if not more so) than legal knowledge in creating good privacy by design.
